OPTIC HEART THEATRE & THRESHOLD THEATRE PRESENT THE GIRL IN THE PICTURE TRIES TO HANG UP THE PHONE AT THE INAUGURAL ZOOFEST IN MONTREAL, JULY 2009

June 1, 2009 – Optic Heart Theatre & Threshold Theatre are pleased to announce that Hume Baugh’s THE GIRL IN THE PICTURE TRIES TO HANG UP THE PHONE, which was presented in a workshop production as part of HATCH: emerging performance projects at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto in 2007, and at the Ottawa and Windsor Fringe Festivals in 2008, will be presented as part of the inaugural Zoofest this July in Montreal. The show is directed by Mark Cassidy (Ten Green Bottles, The Misfit, Terror) and performed by Hume Baugh (Crush, Home Free, Smokescreen).

What is it like to grow up as the son of a dynamic, uccessful, charismatic alcoholic? This one-person show is about a man’s struggle to understand his mother’s life and death. Searingly frank, celebratory, and redemptive, it is a testament to the power of love between a mother and son.

Audiences loved the earlier productions. Carol Cece Anderson, Playwright in Residence at the National Arts Centre for 2008/09, said, ‘Tonight I saw one of the most moving and honest pieces of theatre that I've seen in a long while. It's called The Girl In the Picture Tries to Hang Up the Phone. Wonderfully written and beautifully acted by Hume Baugh & simply and masterfully directed by Mark Cassidy …’ Anria Loubser commented, ‘I was awed by the power of your performance and am still reeling from the revelatory moments – their beauty and resonance …’

Zoofest runs from July 10-26th. THE GIRL IN THE PICTURE TRIES TO HANG UP THE PHONE will be performed at Theatre Esquisse, at 1650 Marie-Ann (corner of Marquette) from July 10th to 19th at 8 p.m. The show is one hour long.
