Change Room

           come in and get changed

In the Artist's Alley at the Fringe of Toronto 2012, there was an unassuming 8' X 8' shed, designed and built as a performance venue for "adventurous theatre artists".  We responded to this space with a project that juxtaposed its small dimensions with a big idea, inviting a wide range of artists to create original pieces inspired by the theme of change.

Bolstered by the enthusiastic response from performers and audience alike, we began to envision how we might adapt a new version of Change Room for other places in the city, making this singular theatrical experience accessible to wider audiences.  As well as designing and building our own portable Change Room, with Anne Barber and Brad Harley of Shadowland Theatre,  we want the opportunity to develop some of the amazing pieces that debuted at our Fringe event, as well as a chance to premiere completely new works with other potential Change Room artists.  Change Room 2013 is coming to a neighbourhood near you!

"Who can be represented in art? How can we make it? How can we experience it? These are questions that have exercised me for years. Whether you see the plinth as a protest or pole-dance platform; studio or stocks; playpen or pulpit; as a frame for interrogation or for meditation, it has provided an open space of possibility for many to test their sense of self and how they might communicate this to a wider world."  Anthony Gormley speaking about his live sculpture,  The Fourth Plinth
